Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is still mostly unknown and unused in schools around the world, yet it is a SDG 4.7 and its implementation is urgent! The World lacks holistic science lessons aligning with sustainability and pedagogy typical in Finland – trusting the capabilities of learners.

Finland has successfully incorporated holistic ESD to its curriculum, and is currently taking the lead in making this transformation possible worldwide, and EduGems is leading the way!

“Learn the fundamentals of ESD” program is designed to give you extra support and motivation with live sessions hosted by ESD experts from Finland and abroad.

Program info

This 6-week intensive program gives you the fundamental skills and comptences declared by UNESCO to teach Education for Sustainable Development. Additionally you will learn the best Educational Approaches from Finland and how Finland has successfully incorporated ESD to its National core curriculum. The program is a combination of live online sessions and self-study modules and tasks.
For who?
  • All level teachers and NGO workers
  • Beginner and Intermediate level. No prior experience required (suitable for pre-primary, primary and secondary/higher secondary teachers)
When?
  • September 27th to November 8th, 2021.
  • 1st LIVE session Monday 27th, September 2021 at 1pm Central European Time (CET), 2pm Helsinki, Finland
  • Course content “unlocks” according to the weekly schedule.
Where?
  • 100% online. Learners get access to EduGems e-learning platform.
  • Taught in English by Dr. Marianne Juntunen.
  • Live webinars include Finnish and international guest speakers.

Week 1: Welcome live webinar + online self-studies
  • Live webinar, Monday 27th, September 2021 at 1pm Central European Time (CET), 2pm Helsinki, Finland. Recording will be available.

Week 2: Online self-studies 
  • Learn the main concepts of 21st Century Teaching
  • Multidisciplinary learning and Transversal competences in Finland
  • The 21st Century pedagogies
After the second week you will:
  • feel more confident about teaching.
  • understand the basics of Education for Sustainable Development.
  • understand best teaching practices from Finland.
  • are able to apply new techniques to use in your own teaching.
  • understand how to decrease your own and students’ eco-anxiety and how to turn it into motivation and willingness to act.
  • learn to foster inner motivation through new ideas and values for appreciating teachers’ work.
  • are ready to start positive pedagogy e.g. strength-based feedback.
Week 3: Live webinar + online self-studies
  • Live webinar day and time to be announced
  • Understand the research-based challenges and opportunities teachers face when implementing sustainability into teaching
  • How to plan ESD teaching? Flipped learning as one method
    Why is there an urgent need for implementing ESD to different subjects?
Week 4: Online self-studies
  • What kind of approaches could ESD in schools involve?
  • Why are Action Competence skills important? How can you support these skills in your students?
  •  How is it to live and teach in Lapland?
After the fourth week you will:
  • Understand why, how and what about ESD.
    Recognise 21st century skills and ways to promote them
  • Recognise the main features of the Finnish National Curriculum and education model that support ESD
  • Feel inspired through new ideas and values for creating a sustainable world, and motivated to encourage your students towards a stronger sustainability mindset
Week 5: Live webinar + online self-studies
  • Live webinar day and time to be announced
  • Get support and guidance on designing a lesson plan that incorporates ESD in your teaching. The lesson plan is a requisite to achieve a certificate from this program.
Week 6: Live webinar + personal feedback and certificates
  • Live webinar day and time to be announced
At the end of this program you will:
  • Feel comfortable to create lesson plans that incorporate ESD
  • Be informed about different tools and resources about ESD you can use in your own teaching

How is this program different to the course modules 1 and 2 (B6 and S8) available for purchase on this site?

This program is designed to be completed within 6 weeks and offers additional support with 4 live sessions.

How is this program suitable for NGOs?

This program is suitable for: 1 – those NGOs providing support to schools in terms of infrastructure and also with training; 2- those NGOs working in development field. We strongly believe that any development program would be successful only with an idea and concept of EE/ESD. This program will include a section mainly for development of NGO workers and how to consider EE/ESD in development programs.
